PHYSIOTHERAPY
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Did you know that Physiotherapists can treat people who have dizziness?
Vestibular Physiotherapy is a special area of physiotherapy to help people who have dizziness, vertigo, headaches, reduced balance, falls and reduced confidence when walking.
Dizziness and vertigo are common complaints, which are quite often hard to describe. A Physiotherapist will ask questions about your symptoms in order to determine the most appropriate treatment.
What is the Vestibular system?
The vestibular system includes the inner ear and brain that helps control eye movements and our balance.
What is Vestibular rehabilitation?
Vestibular rehabilitation includes an individualised approach to therapy to improve your symptoms targeted to your goals. This could involve exercises to complete at home, repositioning manoeuvres, balance exercises and education on the management of your condition.
Common symptoms include:
- Dizziness
- Vertigo
- Imbalance
- Unsteadiness
- Falls or near falls
- Nausea/vomiting
- Headaches
- Anxiety/depression
If your symptoms are provoked or aggravated by movement or position changes, or if you have problems with balance or unsteadiness when walking then a Vestibular Physiotherapy assessment would be beneficial.
Common conditions treated by a vestibular physiotherapist:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis
- Vestibular migraine
- Trauma (dizziness post-concussion or head trauma)
- Acoustic neuroma
- Cervical (neck) related dizziness
